My digital artefact, named @rwfreckled, is a Instagram page showing edits of films that I love from different genres made in the digital painting medium. I am going to develop my project around the idea that people are curious beings that either a) want to know of some new films to watch, b) are interested in digital art, c) like celebrities or d) all of the above.

I will then post the edits on Instagram twice a week, with a small blurb of the film as well as including relevant hashtags to create engagement. Currently it fits well with the FIST method as it is fast to make (and I enjoy it), it is inexpensive (only $15 for the app), it is simple (for now) and tiny as it is just an Instagram page. The feedback that I would have to capture will include comments, likes, engagement and commission requests

Both art and films are what I am passionate about and have enjoyed making in the past. It will fit my portfolio and future career and I have been building an art portfolio over the year to showcase the kind of work I can do.

P.S: as me for a business card next time you see me.

Digital Artefact Pt.3: Making

Uncategorized

giphy-7.gif

My Digital Artefact fuses both digital art and film together to share with the audiences films that they may have never seen, or would just enjoy. Like I have stated before, I feel that not many people have had the great movie experiences that I grew up with. My goal has been to promote some incredible films through digital art, and hope that it may grasp the attention of people who may have never seen these films before.

Digital art was not something I expected to have even taken on, however this experience has helped shed new light on the fusion between technology and art. In an article called Craft and Digital Technology by  Katie Bunnel, I was inspired by the sentence; “Kellner (2000) argues that new and digital technologies in particular can provide experiences and interactions that ‘are just as real and life enhancing as conversation, gardening, taking a hike in the wilds, or caring for animals.’” This is relevant to me because I never thought that digital art would be as fulfilling and creative as art on paper, however I was completely wrong.

Changes that I have made to improve the interaction and engagement of my work has included modifications of the font that I use. My new font looks likes a typewriter, which is an aesthetic that I feel works better with the audience in my digital artefact starter pack. I have also tried to keep the colours of my artwork aesthetically aligned with each other so my project looks more together. I prefer to use pale, pastel colours, however I have also experimented with earth tones which worked well with more sombre and thriller-genre movies.

In saying that, I have kept my focus towards romantic comedies as this is the genre that my audience engages more with. Additionally, I have continued the use of Instagram stories, but I have been asking more specific questions such as what movies they would like to see in order to gain more personal engagement so I can improve within my digital artefact.

Engagement has been quite steady and has not increased or decreased dramatically in the past month. My goal is that I continue to strive for increased engagement and followers as I improve artistically and market my work correctly. However, my feedback has remained positive which proves that I am heading in the right direction, and am always open to critique and experimentation within my work.

I have continued with commissions and edits of friends and followers. For example, a client wanted me to create an edit of her boyfriend and her together to surprise him for his birthday;

As I continue my digital artefact in the future, I plan to constantly update my technique and style, as well as more commissions. I also love to promote my work through modifications such as gifs, which I will continue to post on other social media websites such as twitter. “Consumers are increasingly enamoured with the glitch in any way, shape, or form,” says “twegert” in the article “Perfect Imperfection: How Glitch Art Influences Design.” Additionally, I will continue to accept commissions. I have also thought about the process of making T-shirts with my designs, which I will hopefully explore more in the future. For now, however, I will continue to explore methods to increase engagement as well as better my technique.

Digital Artefact Pt.2: Prototyping

Uncategorized

Since the Project Presentation a month ago, my digital artefact has explored ways to increase engagement and gain new followers.

To catch you up; My Digital Artefacts fuses both digital art and film together to share with the audiences films that they may have never seen, or would just enjoy. I feel that not many people have have had the great movie experiences that I grew up with. My goal has been to promote some incredible films through digital art, and hope that it may grasp the attention of people who may have never seen these films before.

I created an Instagram page to share my work because it is a huge social media platform that will allow me to connect with different people from so many different communities. Thanks to new updates, Instagram also lets me engage with my audience through comments, polls, and questions on my story. It is relevant to the users because it’s easy to access and share.

My process to create my content has stayed the same. Analyse popularity of current and old films, find one I’d enjoy creating, then use Paint S to create my works. I add a quote from the film that is relatable and relevant. I then post them on Instagram.

Screen Shot 2018-09-27 at 3.37.11 pm.png

My current focus is building my online presence and focusing on engagement with my audience. I am doing this to build a strong group of followers that genuinely like my posts. This is important because strong engagement means more people sharing my work = new followers. No follow/unfollow method or buying followers.

Progress:

  • 141 new followers
  • Increase in profile visits
  • Use of an Engagement Group
  • Use of Story Highlights to share other work and ask questions.

Here is my Instagram page growth since the ideating phase:

Ideating Phase

Prototyping Phase

Testing my prototype with users:

Posts:

  • I started posting every second day (3-4 times a week)
  • I would constantly engage with my audience through the use of engagement groups, responding to comments etc.
  • I have learnt that posting content is 80% what they want and 20% what you want to post. So although previously in my Pitch presentation we discussed me focusing solely on ‘romantic comedies’, I don’t think that it is effective enough when it comes to maintaining the audience I currently have. Instead I focus more on a broader ‘genre’ – Chick Flicks
  • What I have decided to do instead is constantly ask questions to my audience and ask what they want.

Stories:

In my stories I use the question box to ask for movie suggestions as well as polls.

  • The answers have currently been a little conflicting, so for the future I will be asking different kinds of questions to find a better response.

What I have learnt based on my Instagram Insights:

Impressions:

  • My most seen posts are mainly ‘chick flicks’
  • Romantic films are popular
  • People like films that they know and love.

Engagement:

  • Engagement groups are incredibly helpful
  • Relatable quotes are the most liked
  • Popular films

Location:

  • mostly NSW based

Age:

  • 18-24
  • These people resonate more with films from the 2000s

Gender:

  • Predominantly female

Followers:

  • I will get better engagement on Tuesday and Friday evenings because that is when my followers are more active

Additions to my Page:

Edits:

Additionally, I have started making edits for my followers. I tested this out to see if it was successful by posting them onto my story and asking my followers if they wanted one. I tried this out because I have been focusing on engagement, and I thought what would be better engagement than making art for them. I post them on my story so it doesn’t mess with the concept and purpose of my page as I still want the focus to be on my film art. The only problem to this would be that it takes up a lot more of my time and sometimes I can fall behind. However, the results have been incredibly positive. I have received many messages asking for an edit and a lot of my followers have been sharing my works as well

Commissions:

Recently, small businesses have asked me to create logos and edits for them, which is something I have never done before but has been a dream of mine. Being paid for my art is definitely something I hope to continuously achieve as my digital artefact develops further.

Example:

I now accept commissions from small businesses who would like a logo or piece of art.

Has my concept changed?

I would say that my concept has changed but has also stayed the same. My sole focus with my films is now on ‘chick flicks’ as well as supplying content that my followers want. E.g. if most of my followers want to see a certain movie, I will share that with them. I now add personal edits into my highlights, which has strengthened my page but is not the sole focus of it. However, I am still focusing on sharing my love of film in the form of art. People have come up to me and told me they watched a certain film because it was on my page. This positive feedback

 The future:

I will continue to post 3-4 times a week, and explore other ways to possibly gain followers faster, such as using different hashtags, or asking pages to share my work. Hopefully I can get more commissioned work, as I continue to make edits for individuals and small businesses.

Digital Artefact Pt.1: Ideating

Uncategorized

Step 1:

The Vision

Creativity has always been a trait of mine that I have physically expressed in my everyday life; whether that be in the form of drawing or painting or building more knowledge in films and other art-forms. I knew that I wanted to include a creative factor into my digital artefact for two reasons; 1. I want to be surrounded by an artistic community that values expression through art and 2. I want to create an artefact that I was truly passionate about and would not get bored of. This is my very first semester of University, so initially I was hesitant about sharing my work with students and therefore a little intimidated. So, despite me wanting to incorporate something artistic into my work, I decided to think a little more about other areas that I was passionate in.

However, as the week for project presentations grew closer, I found myself unable to think of anything else I was more passionate about. I was constantly thinking with the concept of F.I.S.T. What could I create that was fast, inexpensive, simple and tiny, that I would also love doing for the weeks ahead of me? After I while I decided to throw my anxiety away. To succeed I knew that you must fail early and fail often.

I began to study my social media patterns. I would check the explore page on Instagram, analysing the content that their algorithm thought I’d enjoy based on my search history and likes. I noticed that the majority of the content that I see has something to do with films and movie quotes, as well as a few travel blogs and makeup videos. I wasn’t interested in copying what other pages have done. I felt like I could do more. I had a look at who I was following, and came across this page called Sundae Kids, who specialise in cute and simple sketches about love and relationships. Eventually, the idea to combine art and film just clicked in my head, so I immediately started prototyping my digital artefact.

Step 2:

The Process and the Test

When developing my digital artefact, I always wanted to keep in mind the concept of F.I.S.T, and so the drawings I created have been very simple. The first post I made to my Instagram Page, called @rwfreckled, was of Baby from Dirty Dancing.

IMG_8439

The designs only take an hour or so to create per post, so it doesn’t take up much of my time. I have been using an app called Paint for Mac, which was free. However, I will invest in a better-quality animation application if this project is successful. I am focusing on entertainment value for my audience, constantly looking for popular movies and quotes, as well as checking on my Insights to see what my audience engages with the most. I determine the popularity of the post through likes, profile clicks and comments. I also try out different hashtags to see which help me gain more engagement with the community.  For example, will more people see my content if I use #2000smovies or #00smovies? Will I gain more profile clicks if I tag the actor/actress present in my work? I created a starter pack (photograph below) to label the kind of audience I believe will enjoy my work or find it entertaining/useful. This has also helped when it comes to what films and quotes people enjoy more.

Step 3:

The Future

For the past three weeks I have been posting at least once a day in order to test out the advantages and disadvantages of my digital artefact. I constantly check my insights, which is a business tool on Instagram to see who/how many people have seen your posts. This allows me to understand my audience and their preferences on films and quotes. For example, I have noticed that classic/popular films in the romantic genre are more popular than the lesser known films. With this information, I will continue to post about popular films to gain the attention of my target audience. In the future I hope to be able to post lesser-known ‘indie’ films and include more diversity.

My goal for this page is to capture the interests of both artists and film lovers and share with them movies that they may have never seen before. A lot of people I know have never seen the classics I grew up with and love, and I want to see if this page changes that. In the upcoming weeks I hope to grow a larger following and be able to ask my audience what movies they want to see transformed into art.
